A former wife in Pretoria has been sentenced to 30 days in prison if she fails to comply with a court order stemming from her divorce. The ruling comes after Ludwick Pani Mphela took his ex-wife, Anna Thandi Masanabo, back to the North Gauteng High Court due to her non-compliance with the divorce settlement reached on August 11, 2022.
Court documents reveal that Masanabo was granted ownership of a Toyota Yaris but was required to pay Mphela 50% of its market value. Additionally, she was to keep the furniture belonging to their joint estate. However, she neglected to retrieve the furniture, prompting Mphela to store it at a facility, incurring costs of R900 per month since July 2023.
Further complicating matters, Mphela discovered that Masanabo had sold the car without providing him his share of the proceeds. Frustrated, he sought legal recourse, claiming she was in contempt of court and requested appropriate punishment.

In her defense, Masanabo provided various reasons for her failure to comply with the order and denied being in contempt. However, Judge J Mokose noted that her responses did not address the issues raised, and he believed her actions were intentional attempts to mislead the court.
The judge ultimately ruled in favor of Mphela, sentencing Masanabo to 30 days in prison, suspended for one year, contingent upon her compliance with the court order within 14 days. Additionally, she was ordered to cover the costs of the application.
