The EFL Championship, Eredivisie, Major League Soccer (MLS), Turkish Super Lig, Scottish Premiership, and National Football League (NFL) will be televised on DStv ESPN and ESPN 2 from Friday, October 4, to Thursday, October 10, 2024.
ESPN will air live coverage of Sunderland’s EFL Championship match against Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on Friday, October 4, at 11:00 p.m. Portsmouth and Oxford United will face off in the English football division on Saturday, October 5th, at 13:30 (live on ESPN).
Oxford head coach Des Buckingham has explained that his team will not always employ a high press approach, as he wants adaptability from his team’s tactics through the course of the season. “We’ve got different ways that we can do things. We’ve shown a couple of different ways, and we’ll have to keep adapting that.
“We won’t always get it right, whether it’s at the start of the game or within the game, but we’ll obviously try and get it right more often than not. The players buy into it and know they can do it now, and whether we choose to do it or sit off a bit deeper, we’ve got different tools in our toolbox now that we can call upon, and that’s going to be so important as we start to progress.”
The evening of the same day brings an Eredivisie clash from the Netherlands, with PSV Eindhoven hosting Sparta Rotterdam at the Phillips Stadium (20:00 LIVE on ESPN), before a switch of focus to North America with a Major Soccer League (MLS) clash between Toronto FC and Inter Miami (22:00 LIVE on ESPN).
The MLS features strongly on the morning of Sunday 4 October, with New York RB visiting Atlanta United and Los Angeles Galaxy hosting Austin FC (01:30 and 04:30 respectively LIVE on ESPN), before more Dutch action in the afternoon as Feyenoord host FC Twente (14:30 LIVE on ESPN), followed by Ajax v Groningen (16:45 LIVE on ESPN), and concluding the day with a Scottish Premiership battle between Rangers and St Johnstone (21:00 LIVE on ESPN).
More MLS thrills and spills arrive on the morning of Monday, October 7, when FC Dallas heads up to the Pacific Northwest for a clash with the Portland Timbers (01:15 LIVE on ESPN).
ESPN 2 will provide coverage of the opening NFL game in Week 5 of the current season as the Atlanta Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (02:15 LIVE on ESPN 2). The evening of the same day brings a potential thriller from the Turkish Super Lig, as Gaziantep host Besiktas (19:00 LIVE on ESPN 2).
More Turkish football arrives on the afternoon of Saturday 5 October, with Fenerbahce visiting Antalyaspor (16:00 LIVE on ESPN 2), while the afternoon of Sunday 6 October sees Ross County host champions Celtic in a key Scottish Premiership match (13:00 LIVE on ESPN 2).
The rest of Sunday is dedicated to the NFL, with the Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Jets (15:30 LIVE on ESPN 2) and Los Angeles Rams vs. Green Bay Packers (22:25 LIVE on ESPN 2) as the feature games, while the mornings of Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 October bring more rough and tumble American football, with the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Dallas Cowboys (02:20 LIVE on ESPN 2) and the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the New Orleans Saints (02:15 LIVE on ESPN 2), respectively.
The Saints’ Alvin Kamara did not reach an agreement over a new contract with the franchise but insists he is focused on his playing rather than the minutiae of a new deal, which they may or may not agree on in the future.
“I’m not worried about it [not reaching an agreement]. I’m here to play,” said the running back, who is of Liberian origin. “I’m going to play. I’m going to perform. I don’t have an illness. I don’t have any mystery injuries. I’m here. You know what I’m saying? I’m going to play, I’m going to perform, and I’m going to be here with my teammates, coaches.”
