Russia, Zimbabwe Strengthen Ties with Anti-Sanctions Agreement

Amon Murwira, the Minister of Innovation, Science, Technology Development

Russia and Zimbabwe have formalized a new agreement aimed at countering unilateral sanctions, reinforcing their economic and political partnership despite mounting international restrictions. The pact was signed on March 6 in Moscow by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Amon Murwira.

During a joint press conference, the two diplomats discussed cooperation in trade, defence, and security, alongside broader bilateral initiatives. Lavrov emphasized that both nations would enhance collaboration in geological exploration, mineral extraction, energy, agriculture, and military affairs.

“Russia remains committed to supporting African nations in maintaining security and stability,” Lavrov stated, highlighting Russia’s role in conflict resolution and military assistance across the continent.

He also reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to military training and security cooperation, particularly in tackling terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime.

Murwira expressed Zimbabwe’s interest in strengthening economic relations with Russia and expanding its engagement with emerging economies. He reiterated the country’s intention to join BRICS—an economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

“Zimbabwe is dedicated to joining global organizations that promote peace through economic and social interaction, and BRICS is a crucial platform for such cooperation,” Murwira said.

He also highlighted progress in cultural and educational exchanges, including mutual recognition of academic qualifications between the two nations.

Murwira’s visit to Moscow, which began on March 5, follows a series of high-level discussions between the two countries. In November 2024, he met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to discuss bilateral cooperation and future coordination.

As Zimbabwe continues to seek new trade and investment opportunities, this latest agreement underscores its deepening ties with Russia, particularly in navigating Western-imposed sanctions and integrating into global economic frameworks.
